How do I get started?
To send instant messages, you'll need to register at our web site and select a password, then download the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software and install it on your computer. Click on any of the "Join Now" buttons to go to the registration pages.

Where can I download PeopleLink Instant Messenger for my computer?
Click on the "download" section and select the PeopleLink Instant Messenger that is applicable for your computer. Or, if you can't download, but your web browser supports Java, click on the "Start Java applet" link to open the PeopleLink NOW Java applet.

Now that I have downloaded PeopleLink Instant Messenger, how do I install it?
Installation is easy; double-click on the file you downloaded and the installer will run for you, installing PeopleLink Instant Messenger to your hard drive (the installation will be most successful if you let the installer use all the defaults).

What's the difference between the PeopleLink Instant Messenger and the PeopleLink NOW?
PeopleLink Instant Messenger is a software application that you must download and install on your hard drive. The PeopleLink NOW Java applet, on the other hand, does not require a download; it is a web-based Java application. You can run this program on any computer that has a Java capable web browser.

Can I send instant messages to friends who are using a different Internet service provider?
Sure! Your friends can use any other Internet service provider. As long as your friends have registered with us and are logged in to either the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software or the PeopleLink NOW Java applet, you can send instant messages back and forth.

What platforms does the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software support?
PeopleLink Instant Messenger is available for Windows 3.1, 95, 98 and NT, Macintosh Power PC, and other Macintosh systems. You can message anyone who has PeopleLink Instant Messenger regardless of his/her platform as long as he/she has signed in. All PeopleLink Instant Messenger software can inter-communicate.

Can I have more than one person in my message window? Can we "chat"?
Yes you can! If you have PeopleLink Instant Messenger v1.11 or PeopleLink Instant Messenger v2.1 you have the Conference feature. These conferences are instant messaging sessions where more than two people can talk at the same time. You can have as many people as you want in the Conference, and all messages sent to the group will be displayed in all of the Conference member's messaging windows. It's very handy and you can have virtual 'meetings' and conversations with many people.

What does "Secure Message" mean and how do I it?
By clicking the "Secure Message" checkbox on your software you can choose to encrypt your messages. Please note that encryption is only available in the 2.1 and higher releases of Instant Messaging Desktop. If you attempt to send an encrypted (secured) message to someone who cannot accept secured messages (for example, if they are using Instant Messaging Desktop 1.11), you will be alerted with a dialog box. You will then be given the option to send the message without encryption or to not send it at all Return to top

I got the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software from a friend; how do I get my password?
If you obtained the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software from a friend, you still need to go through the registration process. To do this, click the "Join" or "Sign-in" button. This will take you to a page where you can register and select a password.

Do I have to sign in each time I open the PeopleLink Instant Messenger software?
No, you can set the option to "Save Password" in the "Sign In" window. Each time you open the software, you will be signed in automatically. CAUTION: If you do this, anyone who has access to your computer will have the ability to send messages under your name.

The message button is always gray. What's wrong?
PeopleLink Instant Messenger works between two users who both have registered, downloaded and installed the software, and who are both online at the same time. Your message button will be grey, or inactive, if the person selected in your address book is not available to receive messages. If you want to make sure that your software is working, add your own email address to your address book. When you highlight your name, you'll see that the message button becomes active. You can then click on "message" and send a message to yourself.

How do I save my conversations?
In the PeopleLink Instant Messenger program for Windows you can right-click in the message window and choose to save the dialogue to a text file. On Macintosh systems, you can simply copy and paste the text into a text file for later use or review. Please note that the Java applet does not support this feature.

Will PeopleLink Instant Messenger work if I am behind a firewall?
PeopleLink Instant Messenger supports SOCKS and HTTPS proxy servers, and HTTP. To configure your software to work with these firewalls go to the preferences section under the "Options" menu. If you are unsure what type of firewall you are behind, you should ask your Systems Administrator.
Additionally, your System Administrator may need to make some adjustments to your company's firewall. PeopleLink Instant Messenger needs to be allowed to connect to services above port 1024. If your System Administrator wants a specific location to allow the PeopleLink Instant Messenger connection, suggest that he or she ensure that port 5665 is open for outgoing TCP/IP, and PeopleLink Instant Messenger will be able to use this.

My PeopleLink Instant Messenger software starts up when I start my computer even if I'm not online. How do I change this?
Under the Options menu in the PeopleLink Instant Messaging Desktop software, de-select the checkbox Launch at Startup. This change will be set after you close the application. You can then start Instant Messaging Desktop manually from the Start menu whenever you wish to use it.

Can someone please help me with a specific problem?
Sure! Just send an email to support@peoplelink.com and a real person will send you a personal answer to any question about the service you might have.
