What's the difference between
the PeopleLink Instant Message Client and the PeopleLink NOW?
PeopleLink Instant Message Client is a software application that you must
download and install on your hard drive. The PeopleLink NOW Java applet, on
the other hand, does not require a download; it is a web-based Java application.
You can run this program on any computer that has a Java capable web browser.

Can I send instant messages
to friends who are using a different Internet service provider?
Sure! Your friends can use any other Internet service provider. As long as your
friends have registered with us and are logged in to either the PeopleLink Instant Message software or the PeopleLink NOW Java applet, you
can send instant messages back and forth.

What platforms does the PeopleLink Instant Message software support?
PeopleLink Instant Message Client is available for Windows 3.1, 95, 98
and NT, Macintosh Power PC, and other Macintosh systems. You can message anyone

Can I have more than one person
in my message window? Can we "chat"?
Yes you can! If you have PeopleLink Instant Message Client v1.11 or PeopleLink Instant Message Client v2.1 you have the Conference feature. These conferences
are instant messaging sessions where more than two people can talk at the same
time. You can have as many people as you want in the Conference, and all messages
sent to the group will be displayed in all of the Conference member's messaging
windows. It's very handy and you can have virtual 'meetings' and conversations
with many people.

What does "Secure Message" mean
and how do I it?
By clicking the "Secure Message" checkbox on your software you can choose to
encrypt your messages. Please note that encryption is only available in the
2.1 and higher releases of Instant Messaging Desktop. If you attempt to send
an encrypted (secured) message to someone who cannot accept secured messages
(for example, if they are using Instant Messaging Desktop 1.11), you will be
alerted with a dialog box. You will then be given the option to send the message
without encryption or to not send it at all Return to top
I got the PeopleLink Instant Message software from a friend; how do I get my password?

you still need to go through the registration process. To do this, click the
"Join" or "Sign-in" button. This will take you to a page where you can register
and select a password.

Do I have to sign in each time
I open the PeopleLink Instant Message software?
No, you can set the option to "Save Password" in the "Sign In" window. Each
time you open the software, you will be signed in automatically. CAUTION: If
you do this, anyone who has access to your computer will have the ability to
send messages under your name.

The message button is always
gray. What's wrong?
PeopleLink Instant Message works between two users who both have
registered, downloaded and installed the software, and who are both online at
the same time. Your message button will be grey, or inactive, if the person
selected in your address book is not available to receive messages. If you want
to make sure that your software is working, add your own email address to your
address book. When you highlight your name, you'll see that the message button
becomes active. You can then click on "message" and send a message to yourself.

How do I save my conversations?
In the PeopleLink Instant Message program for Windows you can right-click
in the message window and choose to save the dialogue to a text file. On Macintosh
systems, you can simply copy and paste the text into a text file for later use
or review. Please note that the Java applet does not support this feature.

Will PeopleLink Instant Message Client work if I am behind a firewall?
PeopleLink Instant Message Client supports SOCKS and HTTPS proxy servers, and HTTP.
To configure your software to work with these firewalls go to the preferences
section under the "Options" menu. If you are unsure what type of firewall you
are behind, you should ask your Systems Administrator.
Additionally, your System Administrator may need to make some adjustments to
your company's firewall. PeopleLink Instant Message Client needs to be
allowed to connect to services above port 1024. If your System Administrator
wants a specific location to allow the PeopleLink Instant Message Client a
connection, suggest that he or she ensure that port 5665 is open for outgoing
TCP/IP, and PeopleLink Instant Message Client will be able to use this.

My PeopleLink Instant Message software starts up when I start my computer even if I'm not online.
How do I change this?
Under the Options menu in the PeopleLink Instant Messaging Desktop software,
de-select the checkbox Launch at Startup. This change will be set after
you close the application. You can then start Instant Messaging Desktop manually
from the Start menu whenever you wish to use it.
